Sam Robinson: ‘Timber Specialist’
The 2026 Maryland Steeplechase Association Governor's Cup Series. A show and sale of paintings by Sam Robinson to benefit the MSA programs.
I have explored many parts of the world of horses and riding, in Maryland and beyond. But, I have come to understand that the Timber races that are all within a short drive of my studio are the finest subject of all. The courses and the competitors are closely connected to the local Foxhunting Clubs and often in the same country. Following the hunts means you see previews of the spring season to come. The local insistence on straight solid timber fences to race over and the rolling terrain just seem right in the context of this tradition. We attract international riders as well as our own young talent with the challenge of Maryland Timber Racing. My work hopes to celebrate the look and feel of the scene. This year ran the gamut from the clearest sparkling white light at the Manor, to the driving rain of the Hunt Cup. Atmosphere and movement!
50% of all proceeds go to supporting the Maryland Steeplechase Association and its programs.

Sam Robinson is an Equine Sporting Artist in the tradition of Alfred Munnings, Franklin Voss and many other painters who make horses, hounds and country life their primary subjects. His home and studio are in the Greenspring Valley of north Baltimore County, an easy drive from Maryland’s Hunt Country and the rural courses that host timber racing in the region. He paints in a fluent representational style using gouache field studies and photo references to create his larger studio oils.
Sam is a Signature Member of the American Academy of Equine Art and is the Official Artist for the National Steeplechase Association.
